Types of Financial Aid

Financial aid is financial assistance to help you to pay for your college expenses. Aid covers school expenses including tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, and transportation.

Grants

Financial aid funds you don't have to repay. Generally, you have to be an undergraduate student (those who haven't earned a bachelor's or graduate degree), and the amount you receive depends on your need, cost of the school, and enrollment status (full-time or part-time). Grants are not repaid unless, for example, you are awarded funds incorrectly or you withdraw from school prior to the planned end of term. To apply for the following grants, fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

  • Federal Pell Grant-funds to help undergraduates pay for their education. Eligibility is determined by a standard formula passed into law by Congress. Amount of award is based on cost of education, enrollment status, and length of attendance.
  • Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)-funds for undergraduates with exceptional financial need with priority given to Federal Pell Grant recipients. The amount of the grant is determined by financial need, the amount of FSEOG funds available at the college, and the amount of all other aid you are receiving. These funds generally do not have to be repaid. Due to limited funds, it's important to apply early to be considered for these funds. Not everyone who qualifies for an FSEOG might get one.
  • Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG)-Funds are awarded to full-time students enrolled in the first or second year of college who graduated after January 1, 2005 or January 1, 2006, completing a recognized rigorous high school program. Recipients must be eligible for and receive the Pell Grant. Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid to be considered for this program.
  • N.C. Community College Grant Program (CCGP)-Student must be NC resident enrolled for at least 6 credit hours per semester. Eligibility is determined based on the same criteria as the Federal Pell Grant; students not eligible for the Federal Pell Grant may be considered for the grant based on their estimated family contribution as determined on the Student Aid Report. Amount of the award will vary based on the recipient's eligibility or ineligibility for the Pell Grant. Applicants must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) that is used to also qualify for the Pell Grant.
  • North Carolina Education Lottery Scholarship (NCELS)-Recipients are selected based on the information provided by the student on the FAFSA. Students not eligible for the Federal Pell Grant with an estimated family contribution of $5,000 or less will be eligible for the ELS. Recipients must be NC residents and enroll for at least 6 credit hours per semester.
  • North Carolina Student Incentive Grant (SIG)-Recipients are selected by the NC State Education Assistance Authority and College Foundation, Inc. based on the information provided by the student on the FAFSA.

Federal Work-Study

The Federal Work-Study (FWS) program utilizes federal funds to provide part-time employment for qualified students with financial need to help meet their educational expenses. During the academic year, Federal Work-Study employment is limited to 20 hours per week. FWS employment is determined by the student's total FWS award, the student's class schedule, and the student's academic progress. A Free Application for Federal Student Aid form must be submitted with an RCC Application for Student Financial Aid. Federal Work Study participants can work with staff members on campus performing a variety of jobs or may work off campus with an approved community service organization providing tutoring services for the America Reads and Counts program. Jobs and hours are flexible. Students at RCC are paid more than the current minimum federal wage. Students are paid on the last day of each month, and the amount paid is according to the position and number of hours worked. Richmond Community College has more students who qualify for Federal Work-Study than there is funding. As a result, RCC cannot guarantee a job or total earnings awarded.

Work-Scholarship

Work-Scholarships are awarded to second year students in a two-year curriculum or second semester student in a one-year curriculum on the basis of academic achievement and expressed need. Recipients are responsible for securing their own work-site on the RCC campus with a supervisor who must assign worthwhile duties which will provide on-the-job training related to the student's curriculum. The Director of Financial Aid along with the Assistant Director of Financial Aid must approve the work-site and duties. A student must be full-time in his/her second year of a two-year curriculum or the second semester of a one-year curriculum. Also, a minimum of a 2.8 Grade Point Average is required.
