Richmond Community College Serving Richmond & Scotland Counties Since 1964

General Educational Development (GED)

General Educational Development (GED) courses are designed for adults who have not received a high school diploma. Courses prepare students for the five official GED tests: Language Arts - writing, Social studies, Science, Language Arts - Reading, and Mathematics. The GED diploma certifies that the graduate has achieved a level of general educational development equivalent to that of high school diploma recipients. Classes are available at numerous convenient locations throughout Richmond and Scotland Counties. Classes are also offered through the GED Online program.

The GED is a seven and one half hour battery of tests which include five curriculum areas:

  • Language Arts - Reading
  • Language Arts - Writing
  • Social Studies
  • Science
  • Math

The tests measure a student's ability to understand and apply information: to evaluate, analyze, and draw conclusions; and to express ideas and opinions in writing. The tests offer students, who did not finish high school, the opportunity to demonstrate that they have achieved through life experiences mastery of academic skills and concepts equal or superior to the top 70% of high school graduates in the secondary curriculum. There is a $7.50 charge for the official GED test. All classes and materials are provided free of charge to the student.
