
The Adult High School Diploma is a competency-based course of studies in core and elective subjects designed to give eligible students in our service area an opportunity to earn a high school diploma.
The following are core courses are required for completion of the Adult High School Diploma.
English (4 units)
Science (3 units)
Social Studies (3 units)
Math (4 units)
Health/PE (1 unit)
Electives (11 units in Richmond County and 13 units in Scotland County)
A student must be 16 years of age or older to enter the program. A student less than 18 years of age must be screened by College and Career Readiness Staff to determine eligibility. Following assessment and evaluation of student academic transcripts, students are informed as to the number of courses needed to complete requirements for their adult high school diploma. The diploma is issued by Richmond Community College in cooperation with the Richmond and Scotland County Boards of Education.
Students wishing to complete an Adult High School Diploma will need to bring an official transcript in a sealed envelope from the last school that was attended. Additionally, potential students must complete the orientation/assessment test to enroll. Students under 18 years of age must earn a total of 26 credits to graduate in Richmond County and 28 credits to graduate in Scotland County. Students 18 and older must earn a total of 21 credits to graduate. The transcript will be verified by the instructor to determine the number of credits that a student will need to earn at RCC in order to complete an Adult High School Diploma. A student is required to complete two credits with RCC to be eligible to earn an RCC Adult High School Diploma.
Each course is taught by a qualified instructor who possesses at least a four-year degree. The instructor uses modern classroom techniques, which include current textbooks, audiovisual aids, community resources, computer-assisted learning and a variety of other teaching methods.
A graduation ceremony is held in June of each year at the Cole Auditorium. All AHS/GED graduates are eligible to participate in a graduation sponsored by Richmond Community College. There will be a graduation fee for graduates participating in the graduation ceremonies
RCC does admit students under the age of 18 to the College and Career Readiness Program; however, a student must be at least 16 years old to enroll. Underage students will need to bring a Referral for Alternative Education Form (or a Letter of Release) and Official Transcript (for the Adult High School Diploma) from the last school attended. The parent or guardian of the underage student will need to complete and have notarized an application for admission. Underage students wishing to earn a GED must also have an underage application for taking the official GED test that will require a notary's signature. RCC offers classes that meet 20 hours per week for students under the age of 18. Students are required to attend classes for 20 hours per week. By attending for 20 hours per week, an underage student will be eligible for a driver's license in the state of North Carolina.
